Bom Jesus do Monte
Bom Jesus do Monte is a pilgrimage church east of Braga, famous for its monumental Baroque stairway of 577 steps zigzagging up a wooded hillside with fountains, chapels, and allegorical statues at each level. Free to climb. The funicular (one of the oldest water-powered funiculars in the world) is cheap. The view from the top covers Braga, the Minho valley, and the Atlantic coast. Budget travelers climb for free and ride the funicular down.
