Akrotiri Archaeological Site
Akrotiri is a Minoan Bronze Age settlement buried by the volcanic eruption of Thera around 1627 BC, preserved under volcanic ash like a Greek Pompeii. Entry is paid at a modest price. The site is covered by a modern roof and shows streets, multi-story houses, and drainage systems that were advanced for their time. Budget travelers take the cheap local bus from Fira, visit the site, and combine it with Red Beach (a 10-minute walk away, free).
