Zabljak is the budget gateway to Durmitor National Park, and the best value here is the park itself: the highest town in the Balkans drops you straight into a UNESCO landscape of glacial lakes and 2,000-meter peaks without an admission gate at the door. Skip the trailhead drive and parking by walking the 30 minutes from the town center to Black Lake (Crno Jezero), the free and most rewarding intro to the mountains. Hiking is the no-cost headline, from gentle lakeshore loops to the ambitious push up Bobotov Kuk, while the deepest canyon in Europe down at the Tara River is the splurge worth saving for. As a high mountain town it stays cheap and uncrowded outside the short winter ski season, making it an easy add-on between Kotor on the coast and the capital at Podgorica.

Durmitor National Park Viewpoints
The Durmitor massif offers several accessible viewpoints along marked trails from Žabljak, including Curevac (overlooking the Tara Canyon) and the meadows around Žabljak itself. A park entry fee covers all trails.
Tara River Bridge (Đurđevića Tara)
This 150-meter-high concrete arch bridge spans the Tara Canyon, the deepest canyon in Europe. Free to cross on foot, the views straight down into the forested gorge are vertigo-inducing.
Žabljak Town Square
The small central square of Žabljak serves as the gateway to Durmitor's trails, with a few affordable restaurants and outdoor gear shops. Free to walk, the square sits at 1,450 meters elevation and is the highest town center in the Balkans, giving it crisp mountain air year-round.
