Visby is a UNESCO-listed medieval walled town on the island of Gotland, with rose-covered ruins, free rampart walks, and a Viking and medieval heritage unique in Scandinavia. The cobbled lanes inside the ring wall, the church ruins, and the seafront are all free to explore on foot, which is most of what brings people here. Reaching the island means a ferry from the Swedish mainland, so factor that crossing into a budget.
