Trier is Germany’s oldest city, with Roman gates, baths, and an amphitheater you can see from the outside for free, all in a Moselle wine region setting. The Porta Nigra and the cathedral dominate a market square that costs nothing to wander, and the Moselle riverbank gives an easy free walk past the vineyards. It sits close to the border for a cheap side trip to Luxembourg. Late spring and early autumn line up good weather with the wine harvest and fewer crowds.
