The capital of Trentino, the city where the Council of Trent (1545-1563) reformed the Catholic Church. The Buonconsiglio Castle, the frescoed Renaissance buildings, and the MUSE science museum (designed by Renzo Piano) make it a genuine overnight stop between Verona and Bolzano. Wandering the frescoed old town, the cathedral square, and the surrounding Dolomite foothills costs nothing, and a coffee or a glass of local wine stays cheaper than in the bigger Veneto cities. Trento Cathedral
A Romanesque cathedral where key sessions of the Counter-Reformation Council of Trent were held between 1545 and 1563. Free entry to the nave reveals a striking rose window and excavated Roman ruins beneath the floor.
Via Belenzani
A Renaissance street lined with frescoed palazzo facades running north from the cathedral square. Free to walk and one of the most photogenic streets in Trentino.
