The capital of South Tyrol, a bilingual German-Italian city in the Dolomites. Home to Otzi the Iceman (the 5,300-year-old mummified man found in a glacier) at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology. Walther Square, the arcaded old town, and the Gothic cathedral are free to wander, and the markets are a cheap way to assemble a picnic before heading into the hills. The cable car to the Renon plateau makes it an affordable gateway to Dolomite walking. It connects easily by train to Trento and Verona to the south and Innsbruck over the Brenner to the north.

Renon Cable Car
A modern gondola lift from the city center to the Renon plateau at 1,200 meters, included in the local transit pass. The ride delivers wide views over the Dolomites and the Adige valley in under 12 minutes.
Via dei Portici
A long arcaded shopping street running through the historic center with medieval frescoed facades overhead. Free to stroll, it is one of the best-preserved portici streets in the South Tyrol.
Walther Square
Bolzano's central piazza anchored by a statue of the medieval poet Walther von der Vogelweide. Free to enjoy and surrounded by cafes, it serves as the natural starting point for exploring the old town.
