Trabzon is a Black Sea port city and the gateway to Sumela Monastery, a clifftop marvel, with a different Turkish character and cuisine from the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts. Turkish Black Sea prices are some of the lowest in Europe, and a plate of the local pide costs pocket change. Wandering the old harbour quarter and the central squares costs nothing, and the green valleys inland are free to explore on foot. The shoulder seasons of late spring and early autumn dodge both the summer crowds and the heavy Black Sea rain.

Sumela Monastery
A Greek Orthodox monastery carved into a sheer cliff face at 1,200 metres in the Altindere Valley. An entry fee applies, but the dramatic setting and Byzantine frescoes make it one of Turkey's most remarkable sites.
