Subotica is a northern Serbian city with stunning Art Nouveau architecture, a Hungarian influence in its food and culture, and a unique border-town character. Serbian prices make eating out remarkably cheap, and the Art Nouveau walking trail through the center costs nothing: the City Hall, the synagogue, and the pedestrian core are all free to admire from the street. Sitting right on the rail line, Subotica works as a low-cost stop between Szeged across the Hungarian border and Novi Sad or Belgrade to the south.

Subotica City Hall
A lavish Art Nouveau city hall from 1910 with colourful Zsolnay ceramic tiles and ornate ironwork. The exterior alone is worth the trip, and guided tours of the interior are very affordable.
Subotica Synagogue
One of the most beautiful Art Nouveau synagogues in Europe, recently restored to its original grandeur with Hungarian Secessionist details. Modest admission gives access to the richly decorated interior.
