A small industrial and medieval city at the confluence of the Steyr and Enns rivers in Upper Austria. The old town is one of the best-preserved in Austria with a triangular main square, Gothic and Baroque facades, and the Christkindl pilgrimage church, all free to wander. Walking the riverside paths where the two rivers meet costs nothing, and the December Christkindl post office is a free seasonal draw. As a day trip or overnight from Linz (about an hour by train), Steyr is a cheap way to swap city crowds for a quiet historic core. Budget travelers discover it between Linz and the lakes.

The Bummerlhaus on Steyr's Stadtplatz is consistently cited as the finest surviving secular Gothic building in Austria, its stone facade intricately carved, its corner bay window projecting over the square in the Gothic merchant style. The name comes from a small carved animal figure on the corner.
The point where the Steyr and Enns rivers meet below the old town, visible from several free bridges and paths. The view back toward the Stadtpfarrkirche and the pastel waterfront houses is Steyr's postcard shot.
Steyr's Stadtplatz is triangular, which is unusual for an Austrian market square, and it is surrounded by an ensemble of Gothic and Renaissance facades that has survived largely intact since the 16th and 17th centuries.
