The wide West Sands beach is free to walk, the ruins of the medieval cathedral and the castle sit right on the coast (the cathedral grounds are free to enter), and wandering the Old Course and historic university streets costs nothing. The student-driven pub scene keeps eating and drinking cheaper than a typical tourist town. It makes an easy budget day trip from Edinburgh by bus and train via Leuchars.
