Sozopol is a charming Black Sea fishing town with wooden houses on a rocky peninsula, and Bulgaria’s coast remains one of the cheapest places to reach the sea in Europe. The old town on the peninsula is free to wander, the beaches cost nothing, and seafood at the harbor taverns runs at local prices rather than resort prices. It sits a short bus ride south of Burgas, the regional transport hub, which keeps arrivals cheap. Come in late spring or early autumn for warm water without the July and August crowds.

A rocky peninsula packed with dark timber houses from the 18th and 19th centuries overhanging the Black Sea. Free to wander and more atmospheric than its neighbor Nesebar, with art galleries in converted fishermen's houses.
