Sigulda is the “Switzerland of Latvia,” with castle ruins, forested river valleys, and hiking trails in Gauja National Park, all reachable on a cheap day trip from Riga by regular train. The walking trails through the Gauja valley and the views from the old castle ruins cost little or nothing, making it one of the best-value outdoor escapes in the Baltics. Autumn is a standout, when the forested valley turns gold.

Free hiking trails through Latvia's oldest national park lead to multiple viewpoints over sandstone cliffs and the forested Gauja River valley. The panorama from the cable car station side is especially striking in autumn.
The widest and tallest cave in the Baltics, carved from Devonian sandstone and covered in inscriptions dating back to the 17th century. Free to visit with a short walk from the road through Gauja National Park.
