Selçuk

Selçuk is the base town for visiting ancient Ephesus, with a charming village atmosphere, a Byzantine aqueduct you can admire from the street for free, and budget guesthouses run by welcoming families. The town centre, its storks nesting on the aqueduct arches, and the weekly market are free to wander, and family-run pensions and cheap local eateries make it far better value than the coastal resorts nearby. It sits close enough to Izmir to combine the two on one trip, a short hop from the beach town of Kusadasi, and pairs naturally with the white travertine terraces of Pamukkale on a wider Aegean route. Spring and autumn bring mild weather and thinner crowds at the ruins, and skipping the summer heat keeps room rates lower too.
