Pamukkale’s white calcium terraces and the ancient city of Hierapolis above them are one of Turkey’s most otherworldly sights. The terraces and ruins share a single site ticket, and the village of Pamukkale below keeps guesthouses, food, and a free, low-key small-town feel cheap, so it works well as a budget base. Many travelers pair it with the Aegean coast at Kusadasi or the gateway city of Izmir. Going in spring or autumn means thinner crowds and gentler weather on the exposed white slopes.
