Nicosia is the world’s last divided capital, where crossing between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides costs nothing and puts two cultures within one walkable old town. The compact centre inside the star-shaped Venetian walls is free to explore on foot, and local eateries on both sides serve cheaply. It connects easily by bus to the coast at Larnaca and Limassol, so it slots into a wider Cyprus loop without a car. Spring and autumn avoid the fierce inland summer heat.
