Nesebar is a UNESCO-listed old town on a tiny Black Sea peninsula, free to wander and packed with ancient churches and cobblestone lanes. Strolling the cobbled streets, the seafront, and the exteriors of the medieval churches costs nothing, and Bulgaria’s low prices keep food and rooms cheap once you step away from the busiest stalls. It sits a short bus ride from Burgas on the southern coast, with Varna further north and the capital Sofia inland. Late spring and early autumn bring warm days, open sea, and far thinner summer crowds.

Partially preserved ancient walls at the entrance to the old town peninsula, dating back to the 5th century BC. Free to see and a dramatic first impression when crossing the narrow causeway into the UNESCO old town.
