A spa town in South Tyrol with a Mediterranean microclimate, palm-lined promenades, and the Trauttmansdorff Gardens (one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in Italy). The old town and its arcaded Laubengasse are free to wander, and the riverside Passer promenades cost nothing to walk. The old town mixes Tyrolean architecture with Italian cafes. It sits 30 minutes from Bolzano and works as a calmer, greener base than Bolzano itself. Spring and autumn bring mild weather and lower prices than the summer peak.

Passerpromenade
Twin riverside promenades along the Passer river running through the center of Merano, lined with palms and magnolias. Free and flat, they connect the Kurhaus district to the old town.
Powder Tower
A well-preserved medieval defense tower on the edge of the old town, part of Merano's original city walls. Free to view from outside and a useful landmark for orienting walks through the historic center.
Tappeiner Promenade
A 6-kilometer elevated walking path above the city with Mediterranean vegetation and panoramic mountain views. Free and open year-round, it is considered one of the finest promenades in the Alps.
