Mainz is the birthplace of the printing press, a Rhine-side wine city with a massive Romanesque cathedral and a lively market square. The cathedral, the riverside promenade, and wandering the market are all free, and the Gutenberg Museum charges only a few euros. Spa-town Wiesbaden sits just across the Rhine and Frankfurt is a short, cheap regional train away, so Mainz works as a calmer, lower-cost base for the whole area. Come in late summer for the wine festival season when the squares fill up at no cost.
