Luxembourg City is built on dramatic cliffs and gorges, with the free Chemin de la Corniche walkway (called “Europe’s most beautiful balcony”), nationwide free public transport, and a multilingual old town that costs nothing to wander. Eating and sleeping are expensive, but you can cover the sights in a full day without paying admission to much, walking the ramparts and the Grund valley below for free. It also makes an easy free-transport hop toward Trier across the German border.

Chemin de la Corniche
The Chemin de la Corniche is a pedestrian walkway along the edge of the old town cliff, called "the most beautiful balcony of Europe." Free. The path overlooks the Alzette River valley, the Grund district below, and the Bock Casemates across the gorge.
Grund District
The Grund is the neighborhood in the valley below the old town, reached by a free public elevator from the Plateau du Saint-Esprit or by walking the zigzag path down. Free to walk.
