Island in Croatia

Korcula

Also known as Korčula

4 things to see

Korcula’s walled medieval old town is free to wander on foot, and the herringbone back lanes that branch off the main spine cost nothing to explore, so the Venetian-era core works as a budget base even though the Marco Polo house museum and the Moreska sword dance performances are paid. Skip the tour boats and walk the whole town in an afternoon: the strait separating the island from the Peljesac peninsula narrows to barely over a kilometre, so day-tripping by local ferry stays cheap. This is wine country for two indigenous whites, rare Grk from the sandy Lumbarda plain and Posip from the central villages, and a glass at a village cellar runs a few euros rather than mainland resort prices. Pair it with Hvar or Split on a Dalmatian island hop, or bookend the trip with Dubrovnik further south.
