Konstanz is a Lake Constance university town sitting right on the Swiss border, which is its budget superpower: German prices apply just steps from much pricier Switzerland, so it makes a smart base for exploring the Bodensee on the cheap. This nine-meter rotating statue at the harbor entrance satirizes the Council of Constance by depicting a courtesan holding the Pope and Emperor in her hands. Free to view from the harbor promenade, it has become the unofficial symbol of Konstanz.
The Münster (Cathedral of Our Lady) served as the meeting hall for the Council of Constance in the 15th century. Entry is free, and the Romanesque crypt and Gothic cloister are highlights.
The oldest quarter of Konstanz is a tangle of narrow lanes, medieval houses, and small artisan workshops between the Münster and the Rhine outlet. Walking through this quiet neighborhood costs nothing and feels a world away from the busier lakefront.
