Kiruna is Sweden’s northernmost town, a gateway to the Northern Lights and Sami culture in Swedish Lapland. Watching the aurora costs nothing, walking out past the town lights is free, and hostels here run cheaper than in southern Sweden. The overnight train down to Stockholm doubles as transport and lodging on a budget. Aim for the dark winter months, roughly September through March, for the best aurora odds.
