Town in Greece
3 things to see
The base town for visiting Meteora’s clifftop monasteries, Kalambaka sits directly beneath the towering rock pillars and offers budget accommodation for travelers who come for the UNESCO site. The rock formations themselves cost nothing to look up at, and the marked walking paths between the monasteries are free, with only a small entry fee at each monastery you choose to go inside. Staying overnight rather than day-tripping from Athens means catching the monasteries at sunrise or sunset when the tour buses are gone. Spring and autumn bring mild walking weather and lower room rates than the summer peak.

The most dramatically located of the Meteora monasteries, reached by 140 steps carved into rock. Entry is cheap, and the seclusion and views make it the most atmospheric of the six.
Several free roadside viewpoints along the Meteora road offer jaw-dropping panoramas of monasteries perched on sandstone pillars. No ticket needed for the views, just the monasteries themselves.
