The red-thread (Roter Faden) self-guided trail loops the city center for free, the surrounding Herrenhausen Gardens are a calm green walk, and prices sit well below Germany’s trendier cities. It makes an easy budget base between Hamburg and Berlin on the northern rail lines.

Herrenhausen Gardens
One of the finest baroque gardens in Europe, with geometric parterres, the Grand Fountain, and a grotto designed by Niki de Saint Phalle. The Grosser Garten charges a modest entry fee; the Berggarten and Georgengarten are free.
Maschsee
An artificial lake in the city centre, popular for jogging, cycling, and lakeside cafes. Walking the full loop is about 6 kilometres, entirely free, and the most pleasant outdoor activity in Hannover.
Neues Rathaus Hannover
A palatial Wilhelmine-era city hall with a unique curved elevator that ascends the dome for panoramic city views. The building is free to enter; the dome lift costs a few euros.
