Halle is Handel’s birthplace, straddling the Saale River with a distinctive five-towered Marktkirche anchoring a historic center that survived World War II largely intact. Lower eastern-German prices persist in this undervisited university city, making it one of the cheapest culture-rich stops in central Germany: the market square and old town are free to wander, and a big student population keeps food and drink affordable. It sits a short, cheap regional train ride from Leipzig, so the two pair easily into one budget trip. Spring and early autumn bring the best weather without summer prices.
