Gaudi’s whimsical El Capricho building alone justifies a visit to this small Cantabrian coastal town, which also features a dramatic neo-Gothic Pontifical University on the clifftop. Comillas is compact enough to explore in a day and affordable enough to linger, with the green coast of northern Spain as a backdrop. The old plaza, the clifftop viewpoints, and the beach below cost nothing to enjoy, even if you skip the paid interiors. It makes a cheap coastal stop between Santander and Bilbao, and the quieter shoulder months mean lower prices than the August rush.

Comillas Old Town
A compact village center with stone manor houses, a market square, and views toward the Picos de Europa. Free to walk and small enough to explore in an hour before heading to the beach.
El Capricho de Gaudi
An early Antoni Gaudi villa from 1885 covered in sunflower-patterned ceramic tiles, one of only three Gaudi buildings outside Catalonia. Entry fee applies, but the exterior with its minaret-like tower is visible and photogenic from the garden fence.
Pontifical University
A neo-Gothic palace on the hilltop designed by Joan Martorell, Gaudi's mentor, now a private university. The exterior and surrounding grounds are visible for free from the beach and access road, dominating Comillas's skyline.
