Cardiff is the Welsh capital where National Museum Cardiff is free to enter and the regenerated Cardiff Bay waterfront costs nothing to walk. The castle in the city centre charges admission, but the surrounding Bute Park is a free green escape along the river. It sits a short, cheap train ride across the bridge from Bristol in England. Spring and autumn bring lower room rates than the festival-heavy summer.
