Canterbury is a medieval pilgrimage city where the compact old town of half-timbered streets and the surviving stretches of city wall are free to walk. The cathedral charges admission, but the riverside paths and the lanes around the precinct cost nothing. It makes an easy cheap day trip by train from London, so you can skip an extra night’s accommodation. Spring and autumn are quieter and cheaper than peak summer.
