The oldest of Malta’s Three Cities across the Grand Harbour, where Fort St Angelo and the legacy of the Knights of St John predate Valletta by decades. The narrow lanes and the harbour-front promenade are free to wander, and a water taxi from Valletta costs only a couple of euros. The quieter waterfront, lower restaurant prices, and absence of cruise ship crowds make Birgu worth staying in rather than just visiting, with Valletta and the old capital Mdina both an easy bus ride away.

Fort St Angelo
The headquarters of the Knights of St John during the Great Siege of 1565, perched at the tip of the Birgu peninsula. The entry fee is modest, and the views across the Grand Harbour to Valletta are spectacular.
Inquisitor's Palace
One of the few surviving Inquisitor's Palaces in Europe, documenting the Roman Inquisition in Malta from the 1500s onward. Entry is free for Heritage Malta members or costs a small fee.
