The clifftop paths and the public beaches cost nothing, and nearby Bayonne makes a cheaper base while San Sebastian is a short hop across the Spanish border. Shoulder season, late spring or early autumn, drops room rates sharply while the surf and the walks hold up.

Phare de Biarritz
A 19th-century lighthouse on Pointe Saint-Martin with 360-degree views from the Pyrenees to the Landes coast. The grounds around the lighthouse are free; climbing the tower costs a small fee.
Port des Pecheurs
A tiny cove harbour tucked below the cliffs, with cramped fishermen's cottages now housing seafood restaurants. Free to visit and the most charming corner of Biarritz away from the resort gloss.
Rocher de la Vierge
A dramatic rock outcrop connected to the mainland by a metal footbridge, topped with a statue of the Virgin Mary. Free to walk out to and one of the most photographed spots on the Basque coast.
