Bayonne is the heart of French Basque country, with colorful half-timbered houses, excellent chocolate and ham traditions, and none of Biarritz’s resort prices. Wandering the old town along the Nive and Adour rivers and admiring the Gothic cathedral costs nothing. It makes a cheaper base than nearby Biarritz, and San Sebastian across the Spanish border is an easy day trip. Outside the summer high season, rooms drop and the riverside terraces stay pleasant.

Remparts de Bayonne
Vauban-designed ramparts encircling the old city, now a pleasant elevated walk with views over both rivers. Free to walk and a fine example of 17th-century military engineering.
