Bansko is one of Europe’s best-value mountain towns, with winter lift passes and equipment rental costing a fraction of Alpine prices. In summer the same peaks turn into a free hiking playground: the trails up into Pirin National Park cost nothing, and the cobbled old town with its stone houses and mehana taverns is cheap to eat and drink in year round. It sits within reach of Sofia and Plovdiv for a wider low-cost Bulgaria trip. The shoulder months between the ski and hiking seasons bring the lowest room rates of all.

Holy Trinity Church
An 18th-century stone church with a distinctive clock tower, built within fortress-like walls during Ottoman rule. Free to enter and a centrepiece of Bansko's atmospheric old town.
Neofit Rilski House Museum
The birthplace of the father of Bulgarian secular education, preserved as a traditional stone house museum. Entry costs very little and shows how Bansko's wealthy families lived in the Revival period.
