Bad Ischl is a former imperial spa town in the Salzkammergut lake district, where the best of the day costs nothing. The Kurpark and the riverside promenades along the Traun are free to wander, and the market square and the classical Trinkhalle colonnade can be admired without paying a cent. It makes a cheap, central base for the lakes: Hallstatt, Bad Aussee, and St Gilgen are all short hops away, and Salzburg is roughly an hour by car or bus. Come in early summer or autumn for quieter streets and lower room rates before the festival season fills the town.

Kaiserpark
The Kaiserpark in Bad Ischl is the landscaped garden surrounding the Kaiservilla, Emperor Franz Joseph's summer residence from 1854 until his death in 1916. The park grounds are freely accessible to visitors even when the villa itself charges entry, making the Kaiserpark the appropriate entry point to the Kaiservilla complex.
Siriuskogel
The Siriuskogel is a wooded hill above Bad Ischl in the Salzkammergut, accessible by a half-hour walk from the spa town, with an observation tower (Kaiser Franz Josefs Warte) at the summit and a restaurant. The summit view looks across Bad Ischl and the confluence of the Traun and Ischl rivers to the surrounding Salzkammergut mountains.
Trinkhalle
The Bad Ischl Trinkhalle was built in 1831 as the formal pump room where visitors would drink the town's mineral spring water as part of their cure.
