Ankara is Turkey’s capital, and it runs noticeably cheaper than Istanbul while giving a more local picture of modern Turkish life. Anitkabir, Ataturk’s vast hilltop mausoleum, is free to enter, and the old citadel quarter is free to wander for views over the city. The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations is an inexpensive ticket for one of the best ancient collections in the country. As a transport hub it also makes a budget base for reaching the wider region, including Izmir on the coast.
