Courtyard in Salamanca

University of Salamanca

The University of Salamanca is the oldest university in Spain (founded 1218) and one of the oldest in Europe. The Plateresque facade on the Patio de Escuelas is covered in intricate carved medallions, coats of arms, and a famous hidden frog (tradition says finding it brings good luck in exams). Free to see the facade. The interior is paid. Budget travelers stand in front of the facade, search for the frog, and see one of the finest examples of Spanish Renaissance carving.
