Toledo Old Town
Toledo is the “City of Three Cultures,” a walled hilltop city where Christians, Muslims, and Jews coexisted for centuries. The entire old town is UNESCO-listed. Free to walk. The Alcazar, the Cathedral (paid), the Synagogue of Santa Maria la Blanca (modest fee), and the Mosque of Cristo de la Luz are all within the walls. Budget travelers take the cheap bus from Madrid (1 hour), walk the medieval streets, and see a city that feels like the entire history of Spain compressed into one hilltop.

Primatial Cathedral of Toledo
One of the greatest Gothic cathedrals in Spain, with an interior that rivals any in Europe. Entry costs a fee, but the exterior, the surrounding streets, and the views of the flying buttresses from the back alleys are all free.
