Suomenlinna is a sea fortress spread across six islands in Helsinki’s harbor, UNESCO-listed and reachable by a cheap public ferry from the Market Square. The fortress grounds are free. The ferry costs a standard transit ticket. Tunnels, ramparts, cannon emplacements, museums (some free, some cheap), and rocky shorelines for swimming in summer fill the islands. Budget travelers pack a picnic, take the ferry, and spend half a day exploring one of the most unusual free attractions in Northern Europe.
