Suleymaniye Mosque Complex
The Suleymaniye Complex is not just the mosque but an entire Ottoman social welfare system: a mosque, a hospital, a soup kitchen, a bath, a school, and a cemetery, all designed by the architect Sinan in the 1550s. Free. The mosque interior is the most harmonious space in Istanbul. The cemetery behind the mosque holds the tombs of Suleiman the Magnificent and his wife Hurrem (Roxelana).
