Church in Valletta

St John's Co-Cathedral

St John’s Co-Cathedral is a plain-fronted church that hides one of the most ornate baroque interiors in Europe. Entry is paid at a modest price. Every surface is carved, gilded, or painted. Caravaggio’s “The Beheading of St John the Baptist,” his largest painting, hangs in the oratory. Budget travelers pay the ticket and see both the painting and the church. The contrast between the austere exterior and the gilded interior is the whole point.
