Royal Mile

The Royal Mile runs downhill from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, a succession of medieval closes, kirks, and stone tenements. Free to walk. The closes (narrow alleyways) lead off both sides into hidden courtyards and stairways. Budget travelers walk the full mile slowly, duck into every close they find, and discover a city layered with stories that cost nothing to hear.
