Monument in Tirana

Pyramid of Tirana

The Pyramid of Tirana was built in 1988 as a museum to dictator Enver Hoxha. After the fall of communism, it served various purposes and decayed. Recently redeveloped as a technology and culture center, the exterior is climbable (free) and the building has become a symbol of Albania’s transformation. Budget travelers climb the sloped walls, sit on the concrete steps, and take in the view of a city that is reinventing itself.

Blloku District

Blloku (The Block) was the sealed-off residential compound of the communist elite during Enver Hoxha's regime, forbidden to ordinary Albanians on pain of arrest. Today it is Tirana's most vibrant nightlife and cafe district, a grid of tree-lined streets with bars, restaurants, fashion boutiques, and the former Hoxha residence (now visible from outside).
