Princes' Islands
The Princes’ Islands are a group of nine islands in the Sea of Marmara, reachable by cheap public ferry from Kadikoy or Eminonu. The largest island, Buyukada, is car-free (horse carriages were recently replaced by electric vehicles) with Victorian-era wooden mansions, pine forests, swimming spots, and a hilltop monastery. Free to walk. Budget travelers take the cheap ferry (about 1.5 hours), walk or rent a bike on the island, and escape Istanbul’s intensity for the price of a transit ticket.

Ciragan Palace
Ciragan Palace is a 19th-century Ottoman palace on the Bosphorus waterfront between Ortakoy and Besiktas, now operating as a luxury hotel. Free to view from the outside and the Bosphorus shoreline walk.
