Square in Poznan
Poznan’s Stary Rynek (Old Market Square) is one of the largest and most colorful in Poland, with the Renaissance Town Hall at its center. At noon every day, two mechanical goats emerge from the clock tower and butt heads 12 times. Free. The surrounding merchants’ houses are painted in bright colors. Budget travelers time their visit for the noon goat show and eat at the cheap restaurants behind the square.

Ostrow Tumski (Cathedral Island) is the oldest part of Poznan, an island in the Warta River with the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul (free to enter the nave, crypt paid) and the Interactive Centre for the History of Ostrow Tumski (paid, modest). The island is considered the birthplace of the Polish nation (the first Polish ruler was baptized here in 966).
