Scenic route in Sorrento
The Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) is a hiking trail high above the Amalfi Coast, running from Agerola to Nocelle above Positano. Free. The trail follows cliff edges with views 500 meters down to the sea, passing through Mediterranean scrubland, terraced vineyards, and abandoned farmsteads. Budget travelers take the cheap SITA bus from Amalfi to Agerola, hike the 7-kilometer trail in about 3 hours, and descend the 1,700 steps to Positano. One of the best free hikes in Southern Europe.

Amalfi is the town that gives the coast its name, a small settlement crammed into a valley between cliffs with a 9th-century cathedral (free entry to nave, paid cloisters), a Paper Museum (the town invented European paper manufacturing, paid, cheap), and a harbor front of restaurants and lemon groves. Free to walk.
Marina Grande is the small fishing harbor below Sorrento's cliffs, reached by a steep path or steps from the town center. Free.
Positano is the most photographed town on the Amalfi Coast, a cascade of pastel houses tumbling steeply down to a gray pebble beach. Free to walk (the steep streets ARE the exercise).
Ravello is a hilltop town 350 meters above the Amalfi Coast with two famous gardens (Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, both paid), a 13th-century cathedral (free), and views that inspired Wagner, Grieg, and Gore Vidal.
Sorrento sits on cliffs above the Bay of Naples, a compact town of narrow streets, lemon-scented gardens, and views across the water to Vesuvius. Free to walk.
