Modiano Market is Thessaloniki’s central covered market, recently renovated while preserving its 1920s architecture. Free to enter. Fish, meat, olives, cheese, spices, and prepared food fill the stalls. The surrounding streets add outdoor market stalls and cheap tavernas. Budget travelers eat lunch at one of the market tavernas where a plate of grilled fish or meze costs a few euros. Thessaloniki is the cheapest Greek city for eating well.
