Meteora Monasteries

The Meteora monasteries sit on top of massive sandstone pillars in central Greece, six active monasteries perched on rock towers that seem to defy gravity. Entry to each monastery is a small fee. The Great Meteoron is the largest. Budget travelers take the cheap train to Kalambaka, hike between the monasteries on footpaths, visit two or three, and see one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Europe. The rocks are free to photograph from the viewing platforms along the road.
