Leiden Canals and University

Leiden is a canal city with the oldest university in the Netherlands (founded 1575 by William of Orange as a reward for resisting the Spanish siege), the Hortus Botanicus (one of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe, paid, small), and 28 kilometers of canals. Free to walk. Rembrandt was born here. Budget travelers take the cheap train from Amsterdam (30 minutes) and find a canal city with Amsterdam’s charm, a quarter of the tourists, and significantly lower prices.
