Greenwich Park is a royal park on a hilltop above the Thames in east London, with the Royal Observatory at the top, sweeping views of the Canary Wharf skyline and the river, and a fenced deer enclosure in the south-east corner. It is one of the oldest enclosed royal parks in the city, and entering it is free. The Prime Meridian, zero degrees longitude, runs through the Observatory courtyard. Standing on the official marked line inside the courtyard needs a paid Observatory ticket, but the meridian continues past the wall to a free outdoor marker, and the hilltop view itself costs nothing. Budget travelers claim one of London’s most iconic skylines for free, then walk down through the Greenwich district to the riverside. The cheapest way out here is the DLR or a Thames Clipper boat to Greenwich pier rather than a black cab, and the same hilltop pairs naturally with a free skyline day that also takes in the Tower of London exterior and the riverbank near the London Eye.
