Gjirokaster Old Town

Gjirokaster is a UNESCO-listed stone city in southern Albania, known as the “City of Stone” for its Ottoman-era houses with distinctive stone roofs stacked up a steep hillside below a massive castle. Free to walk. The Skenduli House (paid, small) is a well-preserved Ottoman mansion showing how the houses worked inside. Budget travelers walk the cobblestone bazaar street and the residential alleys and see one of the most architecturally distinctive small towns in the Balkans.
